I received a bunch of e-mails on this one, mostly from people who said they had been following this Blog, but had not made any comments on it. I just learned that for every 100 people who may read a Blog post, only one will make a comment, at least a comment that other people can see. That seems to be the case here, it seems. One person, who wishes to remain in the shadows, for now, asked about how do you know what to dump and what to keep. If I had a clear cut answer to that question, I could retire today. Here are some suggestions however.
1. Have a plan, work your plan. Have an Agenda, drive your Agenda, both mean the same thing. You are fighting an uphill battle if you do not have an Agenda, in writing, established, before you start your day. Without a written Agenda, the chances of you making the right decisions, all day long, and knowing what to keep and what to dump is as close to impossible as you are going to get. The purpose of establishing, in writing, a game plan or Agenda, is you have least spent some time, away from the fray and spent some quality time on trying to get your ship in order. This process will at least mean that you are aware of the importance of the process and are working towards getting your time, energy and productivity in line. This is the first crucial step in gaining back control of your time and ultimately your life.
2. Start to divide your day into segments of time. You need to spend time on what I call housekeeping activities, phone calls, correspondence, emails, interaction meetings, things that need to be done so the whole workday does not grind to a halt. These are urgent matters, but not important ones. Important tasks are ones the directly move your forward, things that make a difference, short and long term.
Other segments or blocks of time MUST be reserved for what I call the ” work “, tasks that have to be done, so your goals and priorities are moved closer to completion. These tasks are important, they directly effect your ability to become successful, happy and contented, what else is there ?
3. Start each day and understand that there is just too much on your plate, there really is not enough time to do all the things you would like to do. You have to start to move some things off your plate, permanently. This is where your Power Living life list , PLLL, comes in handy. See more, www.powerempowerment.com. Without some form of keeping track of all of the things you would like to do, you are in a constant state of disorganization and most importantly, a constant state of stress and unhappiness. no one likes to think of themselves as a failure, incompetent, not capable of accomplishing the things they want to do, this state is not a good one to be in.
4. Without getting to a place where you are back in charge, back in control, you are sentencing yourself to be in a constant state of frustration and unhappiness. How does that sound to you? Hopefully not too familiar. Good news, some simple steps can help you get in control and help you start to put things into priority.
Some fast power steps to help you decide what should stay, and what should go.
A. Start to organize all of the things you think you would like to do. Having a better handle on this area of your life helps to enable you to see what you want to do and then you can start to see what you CAN do.
B. Start to clear the decks, start to move activities, tasks, goals that are not feasible for now, move them to the back burner, get them off your radar screen. Moving something to the back burner allows you to free up your focus and attention for immediate tasks, ones that you can do now. It’’s not unlike clearing up space on your computer, with a clearer workspace in front of your, you are able to work faster, smarter and get more done.
Lastly, Reduce the number of projects you are tackling, I can guarantee you that you have far too many projects on the go, to do any of them justice. Reduce the number of ongoing projects to no more than 2, finish what you have on your plate now, before adding anything new.
Look at the next few posts, will be posting some really informative information on Goal Setting, hope you enjoy the posts.
