Owners of Internet Home Businesses Need to be Willing to Accept Life Changes

January 13th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Internet Home Businesses are not the cake walk most advertisers would like you to believe. The reality is that operating an Internet Home business is perhaps harder to operate than a bricks and mortar business. I will get to that idea in a different post, now on to the life style changes that are going to be required. The inspiration for this post came from a lady in St. Louis . She wanted get involved in a new Internet Home  Business that I am currently rolling out, www.hhhmakemoneyonline.com, she wanted to be a Territory Manager, a business opportunity she could work from on.

First, let me explain that I have been working with people on work at  and work from home business opportunities, BEFORE the average person had a computer at home. That is the late 70″s to be exact. From that point to know, I have seen the evolution of work from home opportunities to what we have now, Internet Home Businesses. The difference is one opportunity uses a computer and the other one didn’t, that is all the difference there is. My point is this, the skills, determination, the time and effort, are all required to make any business succeed, whether you have a computer or not. Computers are a wonderful tool, but they still need a person to press the keys and make them function.

On to our lady in St. Louis. She has 9 kids, her husband drives a truck and is on the road for 14 days at a stretch, on top of this this, she wanted to start her own  Internet Home Business. I do not like to judge people in advance, but 30 years experience tells you something about circumstances that you have seen countless times before. This was a situation that was crying out for what I tell everyone who joins one of my Internet Home Businesses, be prepared to make changes, if you want to succeed. The more obstacles in your way, the more changes you will have to make.

This lady had an uphill battle, lets be honest. With her husband basically on the road all the time, she had to raise 9 kids on her on. That in itself is a job and a half, on a good day, on top of this she was going to add another totally separate drain on her time. This is the key point, in order for her to succeed, she had to not find more time, she had to replace some of the activities she was doing now, with new activities.

We all have a favorite saying when we know we have a jog or a task that is coming up. For example,”  I need to take the kids to the mall on Saturday, I do not no where I am going to find the time.”  The problem is this, Saturday, like any other day for most of us is already booked with activities, probably over booked, when we want to add something to Saturdays schedule, we need to not spend anytime trying to find time for something new, we need to spend time on deciding what will have to go in order to make space for the new activity.

Internet Home Businesses need to have their own space, their own time and their own commitment from their owners in order to have any chance at succeeding. This is one of the reasons that when I work with new people on  my new Internet Home Businesses, I always want them to look at what they are doing now, and then decide what will have to go, to make way for their new business. I want them to start from the very beginning, even before they begin, to look at their success as being linked directly to their time and how they are going to parcel it out. For more on this, visit www.powertimesystem.com

To wrap this up for now, start to look at things you want to add to your life and then ask your self this question, ” what existing activities time am I willing to exchange for this new activity?” Forget trying to squeeze the new activity into an already over flowing schedule that is not going to work.

Internet Home Business Inquery, Where Do I Start?

January 12th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Internet Home Businesses require dedication and time in order to be successful, basically the same traits any other venture requires to make it successfully. Internet Home Business Opportunities afford you the chance to enter a business without the costs of an outside office and all of the commuting costs normally associated with work or a business outside the home. Past that point, you have the same difficulties as the rest of us who operate a ” real ” business that requires those extra costs.

 To answer your question, ” where to start ” You will be surprised at my answer, it has been the one that I have given 1,000′s of Internet  Home Business  owners, even before they were on the Internet. Here it is;

 1. Before you start to add to what you already have, make sure you have the decks cleared off and you are ready for a large influx of new activities, tasks, pressures and even more demands on your one non renewable shrinking resource, your time. I have thousands of Time Management Tips for Internet Home Businesses, but I will offer you up only a few now, important ones that will make an impact on your chances of success.

 2. To continue with my first thought,  if you are looking at getting started in an Internet Home Business, you want to first look inward, not outward. You want to do as much as you can BEFORE you get your Internet Home Business to ensure your success. This next statement was always the hardest to sell to people, they simply were not prepared to look at themselves as more important than the business, but they were. I have dealt with thousands of Internet Home Businesses and without a doubt, this concept was and is the hardest to get people to buy into. I have always looked at this as my greatest challenge, if I succeed and getting people to buy into this, I have a bunch of winners on my hand, if not, well you figure out what I have on my hands.

 3. No big secret here, if you want to be a success in your future venture, or the one you have now, you have to learn how to manage and control your time, which ends up translating to managing and controlling ourselves. People always want there  to be something more exciting as the advice, something that deals directly with the business, unfortunately I am not here  to be exciting or entertaining, I am here to provide you with the benefit of 30 plus years in the trenches working as both an owner of numerous Internet Home Businesses, as well as a facilitator to thousands of people who are and were owners of Internet Home Businesses.

 4. When you sit down and think about it, what has the greatest impact on your job or business?, you use of the commodity that dictates and controls every move you make and every thought you have. There is nothing you do now and in the future that will impact you more than your use of your time, nothing, period. To answer the ladies question above, she wants  to start an Internet Home Business and she wants to start somewhere, start with yourself first, then when you are ready, then start on the business.

 5. Starting on yourself means making sure that you have the foundation in place that will hold the extra burden that a business will place on you and your resources. In use the word burden because if you want to enter into this situation with your eyes wide open, you need to be prepared to spend time on your bbusiness and the first question you need to ask yourself is this, where is the extra time that I will have to spend on the business come from? Fair question and one you need to ask, before the obligations of your new business are upon you and you get hammered.

Time as I have said many times before, is a non renewable resource we all have in the exact same quanities. Some of us will succede and some of us will fail. The deciding factor in this is how we deal and use our time. Start with time issues, start with how much of it are you willing to spend on your business and then work backwards from there.

One last note, you can not put 10 pounds of manure in a 5 pound bag. If you are already bursting at the seams  with your current obligations, where is the time going to come from to operate a new Internet Home Business?

A Reply To What are Some Ways to Reduce Stress for Internet Home Businesses

January 11th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Just received a question regarding the Post, Internet Home Businesses, Stress and Time Management, ” what are some ways to reduce stress ”

Stress and its accompanying partner, frustration are massive time wasters and if allowed to run rampant in your business and personal life, can really cause havoc. Here are some ways that you can reduce the stress and frustration in your life. As an aside, reducing my personal stress levels as well as my frustration with some outstanding issues is one of my personal goals for 2010 and if I get more response on this issue, I will expand my posting, let me know if this is of interest to you. Ways to reduce stress, here we go.

  1. We get stressed because we are not in control. This is the number one route cause, from this, everything else flows. When we lose control, we lose the ability to drive our Agenda and when we do this, we end up not getting done what was on that Agenda and then we just slide down that chute into the black hole of frustration. We then get angry at ourselves, because we allowed ourselves to get moved or pushed off where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do gets shuffled off to the back burner. Since this pattern has happened before to us, stress sets in because we know the next emotions will come, frustration, anger, resentment, all of the feelings and emotions that will now make us even more unorganized, less productive and in the end, another day will be lost.

 2. You have to stop the cycle, the cycle of not being in control, you do that by taking steps, small ones, but steps none the less to getting in control of your life and your personal Agenda, to see more on this, visit www.powerempowerment.com. Getting control means having an Agenda, your Agenda for each day. You want to start the day with a plan for that day, what you want to do and when you want to do it. Driving this Agenda, making sure that your wants and needs are addressed and accomplished, will put you in control. This control will greatly reduce your stress levels, will help ease your sense of frustration and most of all, you will stop beating yourself up because you screwed up , yet again

As I have previously mentioned, this is an area that I am working on for this year. I picked this area because it has a huge impact on my performance, if I can get better control of theses issues, then for the time and energy invested, I will get a huge return. That trait is what separates the winners from the losers in life, our ability to pick the areas in out lives that we can work on and in return get the biggest value back to us. Reducing our stress levels is one of those key areas that allows us to do that, relatively small investment of time and energy in, huge return back to us. Internet Home Businesses need to spend their time, energy and resources wisely, this is an area that allows us to really maximize these limited resources.

  3. You need to establish a system that will enable you to have a set written Agenda as you head into each day. Without this tool, you are not in control and your chances of not getting into a stressful situation much sooner than latter is not good. Without an Agenda, a game plan, you are just flying by the seat of your pants, and what has that kind of actions gotten you in the past? Same old same old, if you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get the results you have always gotten. You have to start to make changes and these changes will allow you to have better control of your time and activities, the key to reducing your stress, frustrations and anxiety levels.

That is step one, give it some thought. What is amazing is that by spending just a small amount of time on working on getting in control is that  just a few simple changes can have a dramatic effect. Once the process is started, and you see the benefits, you become a convert and you commit more of your time ,energy and resources to the process, because you can personally see the positive impacts on your life. I can tell you all day long what I think you should do, but until you become a convert, see the results, you will still be paying lip service to it. Internet Home Businesses, in order to be successful, need to work in a stress free environment to achieve maximum productivity. I will be posting on this issue again in the near future.

Stress, Frustration and Internet Home Businesses

January 10th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Usually I write a blog post and get an idea for an article, this time I got an idea for a blog post from an article. Talking about stress, frustration and Internet Home Businesses sounds pretty depressing and unfortunately it is. The reality is, this topic comes up fairly often and it is one that effects more of us than we would like to admit. I want to quickly point out how stress and frustration negatively effects our lives, as well as our businesses and then get to a tip that I am personally working on to improve my performance, as it pertains to combating stress and frustration in my Internet Home Businesses.

1. Stress and frustrationare are  massive time wasters. When you combine them, they take up prime usable time, in what ends up being wasted effort and time.

2. When we allow stress and frustration to enter our lives, we are perpetuating a self  fulfilling prophecy. It works this way. Things are not going well, we are not accomplishing what we want to do, we are rushed and falling behind, the result is, we get stressed out. When we get stressed out, we do not perform as well, and this makes a  bad situation even worse, less production, we get even more rushed we fall farther behind, and we get even more stressed out. The downward spiral increases and increases, the conditions that made us stressful in the first place now get more pronounced and the cycle gets shorter and shorter.

We know add frustration to the mix, we start to get down on ourselves because we see a poor situation getting worse and we can see our ability to rectify the situation deteriorating exponentially. Stress leads to more stress which makes us frustrated which adds to our inability to rectify the route causes of the stress in the first place.

3. Stress  and frustration are emotions that can control how we operate and the quaility of that effort. Starting a day, in a stressful mood and being frustrated at your perfromance, can destroy your productivity and results for the whole day and even longer. It is within this framework that we need to view the impact of these two conditions. Internet Home Businesses need to be able to function at peak efficiency if they hope to prosper and flourish. That is certainly not going to happen if we allow ourselves to be put off driving our own Agenda.

4. When we sit down and look at ways to improve our productivity, our performance and the overall quality of our lives, we need to be sure we look at the impact that stress and the resulting frustration has on us. I always want to look at what I do, and to be sure that I am doing the activities that will have the greatest  impact on my life. I want to invest time and energy and get the greatest return back. Paying attention to these conditions, stress and frustration will give you huge returns, for time and energy invested.

5. I use the word conditions when I refer to stress and frustration. I picked that word because, to a large extent, we allow stress and frustration to enter into our lives. I am not suggesting  that we can simply shut off the switch, I wish it was that easy, what I am suggesting, we have more control over these emotions than outside influences. I believe it is very important that we approach and deal with these two conditions, not from a position of victims but from a position of strength and recognize we can control the effect that stress and frustration could have on our lives.

I have a suggestion, a tip that can help you and all of us, reduce stress and frustration in our lives. The reason I am only offering one tip up at this time is because, this is an area that I am personally working on, and my suggestion to you, is the same one that I have offered up to myself.

Stop failing away at things that you cannot control or have a positive effect on

( my apologies to Don Quiote )

On a personal level, I have a huge bad habit of flailing way at things that I can not control and the result is, surprise surprise, I allow myself to get stressed out, far too quickly and then I become frustrated at myself for allowing myself to get stressed. Then that leads to me being distracted, I do not work as well, do not follow my own advice, then I become more stressed and more frustrated at myself, did I mention it becomes a vicious  downward spiral?

I hope you have read this post and have a different point of view now about the negative effect stress and frustration has on our lives, and unfortunately largley due to our own  actions. That last comment is aimed at me more than anyone else at this point. I am working on reducing some frustrations and stress in my life, almost entirely due to how I am dealing with some distractions in my life, which effects not only my personal life, but my Internet Home Businesses as well.

Some time you have to give yourself a kick in the ass, this is one of those times for me.

Feedback from an Internet Home Businesses Owner

January 9th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Jorge says ” I run several Internet Home Businesses, I have a full time job, a family, children to look after, I do not have enough time to do all of this. I read your stuff, it sounds good, but when can I do all of this ?”

Internet Home Businesses owners , like all the rest of us, have to come to grips with this Irrefutable, if you want to free up time, make better use of your time, get better results, you have to invest some of your time NOW, to get better results down the road. What this means is this, regardless of how rushed and out of time you are now, you have to carve out a section of time now, spend it, invest it on getting better control of your time, the end result will be that you will be able to get more done because of the time you invested now.

Jorge, and all of the other Internet Home Businesses owners are in a catch 22 situation, you are not getting all that you want done, but you are going to continue to be in that negative situation, as long as you continue to operate as you are now. Remember, same old, same old, if you continue to do the same things, you will continue to get the same results, and in Jorge’s case, continuing to do the same things is not getting him the results he wants. Here are some steps Jorge needs to take to help him out of this situation. First, visit, www.powerempowerment.com, spend some time reading the FREE material that is on that site. Now, for some specifics Jorge can do RIGHT now.

1. You will not like this first advice, but unless you follow this, you are not going to be in a position to help yourself.

You need to clear up some time in order to spend some time on improving  the quality of your life.

There it is. this is the start, the beginning step to improving your quality of your life. Notice there is no mention of Time Management, increasing your Productivity, improving your bottom line, reducing stress, none of that, this is about improving the quality of your OVERALL  life. If what you are doing is not to this end, being a happier, more contented person, what are we doing here? This is important, Jorge, you need to look at the advice here as not   how to be a more effective Internet Home Businesses owner, no, this information and advice is about getting you to like your life more, making you happier and then, in the process, we will make you a better, more competent Internet Home Businesses owner.

2. How do we free up some time, in a schedule that is already way to crowded now? We MUST chop. This is another hard piece of advice to come to grasp with, but it is the reality of your situation, Jorge, and the reality for ALL of us. We have too much on our plates, and this fact is making our task of being in charge and in control of our lives, difficult, if not impossible. Internet Home Businesses require as much time as we can give then, we have to make sure that time is quality time, time in which we do the REALLY important things that need to be done to move our Agendas forward.

3. You are going to replace   one block of time, which is now filled with an activity that is chocking your ability to function properly, with the same block of time, which is now empty. Take out the bad, bring in the good. I need Jorge to FREE up just one hour a day, 5 days a week by replacing the activity he would of done, with a new activity that I will give him. It is imperative that Jorge, and the rest of us understand that the only way this will happen, is if Jorge DUMPS what is in that hour, gets rid of the activity in that hour. Forget the wishful thinking that somehow we will FIND another hour in our day to do the new activity that I will be giving us to do, that does not work.

Thinking that we will FIND more time, in an already bursting schedule is a sure way to continue on the path you are already on, rushed, unhappy, not getting what you want and need to get done, because you guessed it, ” you do not have enough time “. So forget finding more time, you need to replace what you are doing in an already existing block of time, get rid of what you would of done in that block, and replace it with what I am going to give you. Got it?

That’s it for now. I will be back in less that 24 hours with the next step. Jorge, and anyone else out there who is following, think about what one block of 1 hour you can FREE up, for 5 days a week. Simple task, but not an easy one.

Summary of Goal Setting for Internet Home Businesses, # 1 to #7

January 8th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

I have received a number of responses to the last several Posts from owners of Internet Home Businesses that have commented on the Posts being helpful to them. This will be a quick review of those Posts as well as me answering a few new questions on the way.

#1. Goal Setting is Not a One time Process for Internet Home Businesses.

In one sentence, the main point is this, Goal Setting is a process that must be integrated into your daily routine, the structure of your day, to be effective and to be relevant. You do not set your goals at the beginning of the year, and then dust them off the next New Year. You make a goal, you then start to add the other ingredients to the mix, adding the time to get things done, Time Activating the time slots in your Day Planner, www.powerempowerment.com, you  start to spend effort time  and resources on achieving these goals. If this does not happen, if you have set a goal, and it just sits there, this should be a wake up call for you. Take action, either start to process the goal, or push the gaol back by dumping it back into your Power Living Life List, to be re-introduced back into your life when you are ready to act on it.

 #2. The Goal Setting Process

This one is simple and easy, you have to make them before you can achieve them. This is an ongoing process, it’s not done once a year, it’s done as part of your evolving growth, daily, weekly, monthly, as often, as frequently as you need to do it in order for you to move forward with your life and make progress towards getting the things you want in life moved from the wish column to the done column.

 3 #  Write Them Down

Goals that are not written down, rarely if ever get done. At least if you took the time to articulate your goals by writing them down, you have invested some time in them and that can only help to move them along. Writing them down also means they are in a form that can be massaged, moved around, added to your PLLL, your Day Planner, and hopefully they get Time Activated into action. Remeber, out of your head, onto the paper, into the system.

 #4 Make Your Goals Measurable

I want to be rich is not a goal, its a vauge wish, I want to make an additional 10,000 dollars this year is a goal. You want to flesh your goals out as much as possible, put details into them so you know exactly what the goal is and most importantly, how you are going to know when you have acheived it. Running a race and not knowing where the finish line is is a frustrating exercise.

#5 Know the Difference Between a Wish and a Goal

A wish is a goal without all the work, time and resources spent on it. That’s the difference, a wish is something that did not make the grade, did not have time or effort spent on it, in other words, it never got out of the starting gate. Saying something is a goal of yours, is not enough, you have to back it up with action.

 # 6 Put a Start Date on Your Goals

Internet Home Businesses need to establish a start date for all of their goals if they hope to achieve them. The same example, I want to be rich is not a goal, I want to be rich, I am going to start to send out my new brochure to 10 new people starting on March 10Th is the start of achieving this goal. If you do not start the activities to achieve your goal by the time you stipulated, you have to either re start it, or kick the goal back into your Activity Funnel, or your PLLL. Letting a goal just flap in the breeze, is a dangerous thing to do. Read my next Post.

 # 7  Face the Reality of Over Flowing Plates

What goal setting does, or should do, is set into motion more activity on our parts, we want to achieve something else, other than what we are doing currently. if you are already jammed up, already have too much too do, what are you doing setting gaols that will entail more work on your part? Get my point?

Just some additional points on these topics, already covered up to now. I hope you have enjoyed these Posts on Goal Setting, have received a few comments,  chime in with some comments and suggestions on  how I can make my material more relevant and useful to you.

Goal Setting for Internet Home Businesses, It Is not a One Time Thing

January 7th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Sorry for getting off track there. I wanted  to start this series a couple of days ago but put up a few others in the mean while. Goal setting for Internet Home Businesses is a crucial step in setting up your New Year, as well as setting up, properly, your daily routines.  One of themain focuses of my approach to Goal Setting is to integrate goal Setting into your day to day routine. Too many of us look at Goal setting as something we do, once a year, then we virtually ignore those goals for the rest of the year. That, as most of us will agree, is a waste of time. Over the next week, daily, i will be putting blogs up here outlining points that will help you not only set up and establish your goals for the coming year, but will also show you how to integrate those goals into your daily routine. Foe more specifics on this process, visit, www.powerempowerment.com

Internet Home Businesses need to be focused, on target and manage their time properly. The following Goal Setting tips will help you acheive these goals as well.

1A. Goal Setting is not a one time process for Internet Home Businesses.

this applies to all of us as well, regardless of the business you are in, regardless whether the goals are for business or personal, the key is integration. That is the term that I use to explain the interaction between your goals and your day to day activities. Simply put, if you make a gaol, it has to appear or show up, somewhere in your day to day activities, if it does not show up, what is the point? Example , you want to learn Spanish this year, you are going to Spain at the end of the year and you want to be able to speak the language. Fair enough, whats the next step? If there is no next step, this gaol was dead on arrival.

This alone, should be a warning to you. Goals that are set, then do not make it into your Day Planner, where you determine what gets done and what sits on the sidelines, goals that sit on the sideline are not going to get done, period.I tell me clients, alot of them have Internet Home Businesses, tom use this sign, when goals do not make it into their Day planners, that they should either re think the goal, or re think their priorities. These checks and balances are their to alert you to problems that are occurring in the structure of your Agenda.

For those of you who are famil;ar with my work on Time Management, www.powertimesystem.com, you know that driving your Agenda is the key to becoming happier, more successful, and getting the things you want to do in life, done. The majority of the things we want to do in our lives will flow from the things we establish in our Goal Setting process. Failure to move forward with our goals, will put a major dent in our ability to accomplish our Agenda and to end up anywhere near happy, contented, successful of fulfilled. As I say many times, this is not an academic exercise, this is our lives, and we only get one shot at it, life aint a dress rehearsal :)

The focus here is simple, if you make a gaol, that goal has to go some where in order for it to have any chance at succeding, being accomplished. Where it has to go is into your daily life, it has to appear where everything that you do appears, it has to appear in your Day Planner. If any gaol you set, does not end up appearing in your Day Planner, that should be an immediate RED FLAG for you. Not appearing in your Day Planner is the kiss of death for that gaol, it will not get done , at least not while it is persona non grata. Internet Home Businesses need to ensure that goals that they set, do get accomplished. This tip, plus the others to follow, will ensure these goals will get accomplished.

Tips on Increasing Productivity for Internet Home Businesses

January 6th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Internet Home Businesses

Internet Home Businesses operate the same as any other business, except, you operate from your home, make sense? The issue is that because you are operating from home, there are different issues you have to be aware of, and then be prepared to deal with them. I have been dealing with Time Management and Increasing Productivity in self employed business owners for over 35 years, www.powerempowerment.com. we all struggle with trying to get the most value out of the time and energy we expend, in our personal lives and in our business endevours.

Internet Home Businesses require an extra effort on our part to stay on track, keep our focus and to drive our own Agenda. Let’s start with this  issue.

 Game Plan

As you are reading this, can you pull out your written game plan, business plan, agenda that you have established  for your Internet Home Businesses? If not, you are fighting an uphill battle. With the distractions of working on the Internet, plus the added inherent problems with working from home, not having a written plan of attack puts an additional  burden on yourself. If I took 1,000 clients of mine, separated the most successful ones from the ones that were struggling, the most successful ones would have a written game plan, the less successful ones would not. That in itself should be a warning to those that are trying to develop and run their Internet Home Businesses on the fly.

It always comes down to time. Time and how we use it determines our fate, in life, in business, the final determinator of out fate is how we parcel out and invest our time. Take today for example,  it makes not a ounce of matter where you are, who you are, or what you did or did not do today, what I am about to say will be relevant to all of us.  We can all ask ourselves this one question, ” Am I happy today?” If the answer is yes, the reason you are happy is because you are happy with the choices you made today regarding your use of your time. You are happy because instead of doing task B, you did task A and because of that choice, you ended up being happy.

This may be a simplified version of what took place in your life today, but simple or not, I am sure you can agree with the logic. How we use and direct our use of time has a direct and undeniable impact on our lives, our happiness and the results we get in our lives. If you agree with this premise, then you should agree that anything you can do to make sure you make the right decisions about your use of time, you should do, right?

We are talking about your game plan. Do you have one? If not, that is a place to start. Here are some tips on what a good game plan should be:

 1. Written. If your game plan is not written, it will be pretty well worthless. Thoughts that are running through your head, along with the million other things you are thinking about and dealing with do not constitute a game plan, business plan or any form of proper Prioritizing system. If you do not take the time to put something down on paper, into a word document, spread sheet, then the value to you as an organizing game plan or Agenda, plummets to about zero. It’s the old bear bug rising up again, your use of time. The reason you do not have a written game plan is because you have decided to use your time to do something else, something else you deem to be more important than writing  out a proper game plan. This is your choice, and in the example above, will you be happy with this decision, compared to the other decision you made?

I will leave you with that thought. Believe it or not, that thought is the pivitol factor in you becomming successful and happy, or not. It’s the choices we make on a daily basis, the choices we make in how we are going to use out time, determines our fate. The better we are in doling out this valuable non renewable resource, the more value we get out of our lives. For more on this, www.powerempowerment.com

I always get feedback when ever I mention the “important versus the really important” concept. Some people who own Internet Home Businesses get a little bent out of shape about the difference and unnecessarily make their lives a little more difficult than they have to be. I want to spend some time now going a little deeper into this concept in an effort to clarify it. The most important point I want to make before I start is this, if the idea of differentiating between important activities and really important activities is now on your radar, you are putting yourself in a position to really make some strides in getting the most out of your time and effort. That is the point in all of   this, we are each going to invest time and effort on a daily basis, we just want to ensure that for the time and effort we expend, we get the greatest return.

Timing is everything

What is not important today, will become important later on down the road. This is the standard problem with organizing our time and activities. We allow, through lack of proper planning , prioritizing and organizing our time, for relatively unimportant simple tasks to creep up on us and then because we have allowed them to dictate to us, they now become URGENT, as well as IMPORTANT, a very bad combination for Internet Home Businesses. Example, you have a simple task that needs to be done at the end of each month, it could be anything, a report, a summary, an inventory, a task that takes, lets say 3 hours, but it’s due at the end of the month and has to be completed on the last day, of every month. We all know where this is going, don’t we?

On the last day of the month, it’s 4 o’clock, one hour before you have to leave to pick up the kids at day care, you have to complete a 3 hour task in one hour. Welcome to the world of letting a simple 3 hour task take over your life, cause you undue stress and make whatever you accomplished that day, week or month, pale in the face of this defeat. I use the word defeat because you allowed yourself to be backed into a corner, a corner that you can not escape from, you lost and you lost to not another person but to yourself.

Welcome to our world, our world refers to the world of people who are aware that the above example happens, if we let it happen. This example was totally avoidable, that is what makes the defeat even more galling, we knew the task had a deadline we knew that it happens every month  , but in spite of having the ability to control the situation, we allowed the situation to control us. we were the passenger, not the driver in this situation. We did not drive our Agenda, we allowed for other people and other things to allow their Agenda to take precedence over our ours, a very unproductive situation to allow us to find ourselves in.

There are many ramifications that can be pointed out in this simple, but powerful example. Lots of issues at play here. The one that I am pointing out here is this one, if we allow our time to get way from us, out of our control and allow it to just run away from us, as we did in this example, we are just not going to be as productive and get what we want to get done, and the result is this, we end up being unhappy, among many other feelings. Not being happy, leads to a host of other problems. Stress, resentful, anxiety, dissatisfaction, emotions that will make us even more unproductive and less successful, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, a dangerous place to find yourself in.

It’s the collateral damage that really makes the negative impact on us. The fact that one report or task was late is not the real underlying issue, its the impact that this has on us in other areas that causes a ripple effect. We are all human, we all work better and get more done when we are happy, in a good mood, and things are going reasonably well for us. We things do not go well for us, things do not work out for us,we tend to get down on ourselves and things can start to spiral out of control very quickly. This is why we want to get on top of the little things, before they take on a significance far out of proportion to what they should be.

A small example of why timing is everything. To learn more about Time management and how getting control of your time and learning how to better drive your own Agenda, visit me at www.powerempowerment.com

Some one emailed in as soon as I posted the last post and asked, ” How do you decide the difference between important and really important activities? ”

I am happy to answer that question, but I have to do it with a statement first. As important as that question is, it really is a question you need to ask, AFTER you have worked on this issue first.

My advice is this, do not spend too much time on trying to determine what is important and then what is really important, instead, spend your time on separating important issues, from everything else. This is where your greatest returns and benefits will come, initially. Remember, we want the biggest bang for our buck, we want to reap the maximum benefit from the time and effort we invest, that’s the goal.

I am not diminishing the real critical impact that doing your key priorities will have on your results, I am just pointing out that at this stage, you are going to be so much better off if you spend your time on just getting your bearings and getting the foundation laid for more complex and subtle Time Management maneuvers later on. It’s the old adage, lets walk, then jog and then when we are in shape and ready, an all out sprint.

Everything thing is relative. if you are now looking at what you do through the filter of, is this more important than that, should I invest my time here, instead of over there, if you are now at least asking these questions, how far have you already come, compared to prior asking these questions. Only you can answer that question.

One more addition to this thought. If you sat down and made a list of the 10 most important things you want to achieve this year, 10 being the least important, and 1 being the most important, what is the difference, what is the impact to you of achieving number 6 on the list, instead of number 7?  Before you decide on your answer, ask this question, what is the impact to you of achieving number 10, your least critical task, but then not achieving number 1 on your list, your most coveted and important goals.?

You can see clearly where I am going with this. Side by side goals, it is hard to pinpoint which one would have the grater impact on you in either not being done or being done at the expense of the other. Hard to come up with a definitive answer. The question of getting done of not getting number 1 done at the expense of number 10, no problem with coming up with a quick answer here is there.

This is why its important at this stage is to just separate the important from just all of the rest. Within the important list you will have not much of a problem of picking any number of activities and tasks to keep you busy. The fact that you will be drawing from a group of already screened, prioritized activities will give you a tremendous boost in productivity and the satisfaction at the end of the day that not only did you work hard, but you also worked smart.

It’s not enough to just mouth the platitudes, work smarter, not harder, but you also have to be able to do the walk, as well as say the talk. For tips on getting to know the walk, visit www.powerempowerment.com
