Internet Home Business Time Management Tip of the Week, April 11th – 17th

April 12th, 2010 Posted in Internet Home Business

As most of you know, I  have a site that  is dedicated to Time Management, that is one of my passions and an area that I  feel I have the most to offer people. The majority of the people who come to this site come because they want to start their own Internet Home Business. I am in the process of re doing this  site, and getting most of the current links off the site because they are not ones that I would recommend to new, as well as experienced  people to have on their sites That is a discussion for a whole other day, today, is about Time Management, self management.

The Time Management Tip for this week is, Batch Your Interruptions.

This is a simple tool that you can use, starting today and its one that will start to save you time right off the bat. First, what is an interruption?  The definition we use in the Power Time Management System is this,  ” anything that interferes with you accomplishing your number one priority, is an interruption “  Think about that for a second, this definition is very narrow, it refers to everything that may detract from you accomplishing the specific task you are doing at the time.

Batching your interruptions means you want to time activate segments of your day when you  schedule the things and activities that will interrupt you when you are trying to get some key work accomplished, your priorities. What are the things that interrupt your day?,  telephone calls, drop in visitors, e mails, order desk,  co workers, self interruptions, research, link lounging, when your definition of an interruption is EVERYTHING but what you are working on now, this is just the tip of the ice berg.

Time Activating segments of your day means putting specific tasks into specific time slots, example, from 10:00 to 11: 00 I  want to clear all of my telephone messages, e mails, have the door of my office open to receive walk ins, etc. This time slot is not going to be  enough time to do all of those tasks, but it will enable you to address the most pressing and will allow you to satisfy the need we all have to see if we do have calls, emails, need to talk to people. By batching these  kinds of interruptions, we are accomplishing a number of key Time Management processes at once.

One of the worst destroyers of out productivity during the day is, the dreaded cell phone and its fellow time thieves. The second worst stealer of our time and productivity is checking our emails an insane amount of times per day. What batching your interruptions does, is allows some of us to satisfy our addictions to our  cell phones and our emails, and still manage to get some work done. If you own an Internet Home Business, you have to be able to separate what I call the housekeeping tasks, from the real work.

Real work are the jobs that move us forward, jobs that add value to what we are trying to do and when we add up the real work, we can point to the results and say, I am now more successful, happier and my Internet Home  Business has been moved forward. Start to look at the composition of your day, how much of your day do you allow housekeeping work to take up, and what is left over for you to accomplish real work in? While you  assess this, also pay attention to how often you allow an interruption to stop you from accomplishing an important task or key priority.   Have a great day, see you tomorrow.
