Work at Home Converts - Warning, Do Not Confuse Being Busy with Being Productive

Just had a very interesting exchange with one of my members on a Time Management site that I own. She was telling me how she spends hours and hours on the Internet looking at all of the business opportunities, work from home sites, all of the different ways you can make money on the Internet. She complained that this was hard work and that it took up a great deal of her time. I understood exactly what she was talking about.

The Internet is a wonderful place, it is also a place that can suck up your time, energy and resources and give you nothing in return, if you let it. Let's look at some of the areas that can use up our time, with very little in return;

· The Internet is a massive depository of information, all at our fingertips. We have all done this on the Internet I am sure, we intend to sit down and find a specific piece of information for our job or work, and it will only take a minute because all we want to do is find just one tiny bit of information. We plug in the address , find the site and start to write down what we want, while we are doing this, another link on the page gets our attention, we click on it, only for a second.

Two hours latter, we are 12 web sites away from our original site, and way off topic. If we all had a dollar for every time we did this, we all would be rich. How to avoid this situation is important to us, if we want to use the Internet instead of falling into the trap of being busy but not accomplishing what we set out to do, in other words, we want to be productive and not just busy.

I find that if I separate what I call the busy activities from my actual work activities, this helps to separate the two and I can get more done. Busy activities can be anything from research to casual surfing to just checking something on line. These activities are important and need to be done, but they should not crowd out the activities that need to be done on a daily basis to make your work at home business or your new web site a success.

Another trick that I use is this,

I hope you have already set yourself up with a good Time Management system and are using it. You should already be prioritizing your activities and have a daily plan set out in writing of the tasks and activities that you want to accomplish on a daily basis. If not, you need to attend to this aspect of your regime. Without a good way to organize yourself with checks and balances you put into place, even the best work from home opportunity will fail if you are not able to stay focused and on target.

· Another issue with the huge amount of information out there is the numbers and variety of different businesses and work at home choices there are. It's staggering, even for someone who is in the industry. Someone could spend months and months on looking at, investigating and trying to pick one opportunity out of the thousands that are out there. This is another place that could burn up months of your time, effort and resources. What to do?

· I have a quote that I use a lot, its from Mark Twain, “ Even if your are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there “ Sometimes when the choice are over whelming, when the variety seems endless, you have to just jump in, get your feet wet, and start to swim.

Remember, you want the Internet to serve you, not the other way around. Use the resources that are available out there but be sure that you keep your eye on the ball and make sure that you get what you need done, before you start to get into the “ busy work “
